The aesthetics of practical objects

In his diploma dissertation, David Oelschlägel - student at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design - is focussing on the aesthetics of practical objects. He is delighted in particular with the functionality and industrial aesthetics of the high quality BESSEY all-steel screw clamps. BESSEY Tool was very happy to support him within the framework of his project with a number of clamps, from which home furniture pieces were produced with exceptional flair:

The "Sven" clamp ensemble, comprising a clamp bench and clamp table

The clamp table`s dimensions are 120 cm x 80 cm, precisely reflecting the size of a Euro pallet. The bench is exactly half the size, meaning that two benches can be stacked on top of one table. In order to be able to stack these up without any risk of slipping, a rubber band is inserted into a groove in the frame of both objects. This also cushions vibrations during transportation and prevents slipping during loading into the HGV.

The corners of the benches and tables are 45° bevelled, in order to accommodate the bevelling on the Euro pallets, whilst also assigning a specific position to the screw clamps. With respect to the coating material, 12mm multiplex with a white melamine layer was selected. The white coating lends the ensemble a refined appearance and provides an interesting contrast to the birch-layered plywood visible in the cut-outs.

In the case of both table and bench, the high quality clamps from BESSEY are staged through their specific placement and mounted in the diagonals to the corners in a pre-milled guide. This angled diagonal positioning lends the structure greater stability once it is assembled. When the piece is folded up, it represents a graphic element.

If the table and bench are no longer required then the screw clamps disappear into the base structure, into pre-milled grooves. In order that these do not fall out in transit, they clamp securely into the framework when rotated one half turn.

David Oelschlägel will be presenting his exhibits at the world`s largest furniture exhibition in Cologne from the 18th to the 24th January 2010. Here, visitors will also find more of his aesthetic utility objects produced from industrial functional items.
